Game Changing Moments – Bubba’s triple feat

Winning at Riviera is a major accomplishment. Winning at Riviera three times is nearly unheard of. In 2018, Bubba Watson etched his name in the record books next to Ben Hogan and Lloyd Mangrum as a player to record three wins at The Riviera Country Club.

Coming off victories in L.A. in 2014 and 2016, Watson looked to make it three victories in five years during the 2018 tournament. Playing into the weekend in one of the final groups, it wasn’t until the 14th hole on Sunday that Watson made his move to the top of the leaderboard.

“I hit a bunker shot on 14,” Watson said. “I wasn’t even thinking about winning until the bunker shot went in and I was like ‘wait a second, I’m winning the golf tournament.’ So, then I just tried to limp home and somehow make pars. I birdied on 17 and then tried to make par on 18 to secure the victory.”

GAME CHANGING MOMENTS
The Genesis Invitational continues a longstanding tradition of professional golf in Los Angeles. Debuting in 1926 at Los Angeles Country Club as the Los Angeles Open, the tournament was staged at various courses throughout the Los Angeles area before permanently settling at The Riviera Country Club in 1973. The tournament and Riviera have seen many major moments in golf history over the years. In a new series, we look back at Game Changing Moments in the event’s history.
