Davis Thompson, Scottie Scheffler Top Star-Studded Leaderboard After Round 2 of Genesis Invitational
The sun was shining and the stars were out at Torrey Pines Golf Course during Friday’s second round of The Genesis Invitational. Four of the top seven players in the world are atop the leaderboard as sunny conditions and soft greens lead to scoring opportunities.
Davis Thompson and Ludvig Åberg posted the low round of the tournament on Friday with a pair of six-under-par 66s. Thompson (8-under 136) holds the 36-hole lead, one shot ahead of World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.
“I felt like I hit the ball great at the start,” Thompson said. “Hit a lot of fairways and greens and then on the back nine I just, you know, I had two chip-ins, hit a great iron shot on (No.) 13 and then made two bogeys, but bounced back nicely. It’s kind of like steady golf on the front and kind of a rollercoaster on the back. Yeah, birdieing 16 and 18 definitely helped out.”
The South Course at Torrey Pines is a tough, but fair, test of golf for the world’s best players in the 2025 Genesis Invitational.
“I just really like fair golf courses that are tough,” said Åberg, the world’s sixth-ranked golfer who is tied for fifth place at 4-under 140. “Torrey Pines is right in front of you, you sort of know what to do. Your fairway’s right here and it’s still hard. The greens are, they’re small, but if you’re in the fairway you can be quite aggressive. It’s just a good golf course. It’s challenging but it’s also very fair.”
While Torrey Pines has been a test, the world’s best golfers have been up for the challenge. World No. 3 Rory McIlroy (fourth place at 5-under 139) turned in a round of 5-under 67 on Friday, while World No. 7 Wyndham Clark, Nick Dunlap, Jake Knapp and Tommy Fleetwood all sit in the top 14 on the leaderboard heading into the weekend.
The favorable conditions during the second round not only help players position themselves on the leaderboard, but the scoring is also making an impact through the Genesis Birdies For Good initiative. As part of the California Rises campaign, Genesis is donating to Los Angeles County wildfire relief efforts for every birdie, eagle and hole-in-one during the 2025 Genesis Invitational. Through the first two rounds, 425 bridies or better have been made, contributing $127,500 to relief efforts.
The third round of the 2025 Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines tees off at 7 a.m. PT on Saturday. A limited number of tickets for weekend rounds remain.
