A star has arrived
The Genesis Invitational annually tests the world’s best players on championship courses and the 99th edition of the PGA TOUR Signature Event was no different. Torrey Pines South Course showed its teeth and Ludvig Åberg emerged victorious.
For the 25 year-old Swede, a six-under-par 66 in the final round pushed him past an elite and crowded leaderboard. A seven-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th hole sealed his second PGA TOUR victory.
“It was a really cool finish to a great week,” Åberg said. “I’ve had my girlfriend here all week, my coach came in Friday night, I’ve had some other guys on my team being with me all week. It was really cool and it felt like we did it together. I had tremendous help with Joe, my caddie, today. Yeah, it feels really cool.”
Åberg birdied four holes on the back nine en route to his win. In the third round, he aced the par-3 third hole. With his 21 birdies or better, Åberg helped contribute to Birdies For Good, an initiative in California Rises that donated $300 per birdie and eagle and $10,000 for each hole-in-one during the competition. in total, Genesis donated nearly $280,000 to LA wildfire relief thanks to the two holes in one, 21 eagles and 845 bridies made during the tournament.
Aberg earned a $4 million winner’s prize from the PGA TOUR Signature Event’s $20 million purse, moved to No. 1 in the PGA TOUR’s FedExCup standings after collecting 700 FedExCup points, and vaulted two spots in the Official World Golf Ranking to No. 4.
The Genesis Invitational is hosted by Tiger Woods and Torrey Pines is the site of eight of Woods’ 82 career PGA TOUR victories. For Åberg to add his name to The Genesis Invitational’s storied history at a course tied to Woods’ legacy means so much.
“To win his event, he means so much to our game and to our tour,” Åberg said. “It’s really cool, it means a lot. And he is the GOAT.”
The Genesis Invitational will return to Riviera for its 100th anniversary tournament in 2026. See you at Riv.
