PGA TOUR Radio On-Air with TGR Learning Lab Students

Through career-connected learning opportunities, TGR Learning Lab Anaheim students got the opportunity to job shadow and go on-air as co-anchor with PGA TOUR Radio host Brian Katrek.

Prior to the live show, students experienced the behind-the-scenes aspects of radio production as Katrek delved into the technical equipment and set-up that is required for a live broadcast. With headsets on, microphones checked and cords all connected, students put their co-anchor voices on as the “On-Air” sign flashed.

During the broadcast, Katrek and students covered latest golf news, answered callers’ questions and discussed their passion for multimedia. Diego, a student taking part in after-school programming at the Learning Lab, expressed how the day strengthened his dream to one day work in sports broadcasting.

“My experience today was just amazing,” Diego said. “I got to see a live radio show in progress, and it really solidified what I want to do in the future. There are so many categories that fall under broadcasting, that I can choose a path and continue to fulfill my dream.”

Gyla Bell, senior executive director of the TGR Learning Lab Anaheim, also joined the crew to emphasize TGR Foundation’s mission and how it’s brought to life through TGR Learning Lab programs. “We give young people opportunities to see what it’s like to have real world experience in careers aligned with their interests,” Bell said of the value of career-connected learning opportunities.

Katrek and his PGA TOUR Radio show have previously broadcasted live from two events run by TGR Live. At The Genesis Invitational and Hero World Challenge, PGA TOUR Radio is among the list of credentialed media annually covering the tournaments. Both tournaments raise funds to support TGR Foundation’s national programs and TGR Learning Labs.
