A Masterful Showcase
It has been said that playing well at Riviera can lead to success at Augusta National. While winning at one course doesn’t necessarily mean guaranteed success at the other, putting together a solid four rounds in Los Angeles in February can be a barometer for what’s to come in April. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is just the latest example of this theory.
During the 2024 Masters Tournament, Scheffler showcased the game that has vaulted him to the top spot on the world rankings. For the second time in three years, he won the Masters, and proving that playing well in LA can translate to success at The Masters. In six career starts at The Riviera Country Club, Scheffler has finished in the top-10 twice: 2022 (T7) and 2024 (T10). In both those years he would go on to win the green jacket.
Both Scheffler’s Masters victories were by comfortable margins, something that also can be traced back to Riviera. In 2018, as a senior at the University of Texas, Scheffler played his way into the PGA TOUR event at Riviera thanks to a six-shot victory in the Collegiate Showcase. The start at Riviera marked his fifth PGA TOUR start. Since turning professional, Scheffler hasn’t missed a cut at Riviera in five starts.
The Masters’ victory wasn’t only a triumph for Scheffler. His caddie, Ted Scott, won at Augusta National for the fourth time. Scott was on the bag for both Scheffler’s wins in addition to Bubba Watson’s two victories in 2012 and 2014. In addition to four career victories at Augusta National, Scott has been victorious at Riviera three times while on the bag for Watson.
